This summer, Nintendo 3DS will incorporate Netflix functionality. Netflix members who have an unlimited plan starting at $7.99 a month can access a broadband wireless Internet connection and instantly stream movies and TV shows directly to their Nintendo 3DS systems, similar to how the service is used on the Wii console. This means people can start watching a movie via Netflix on their Wii systems at home and then pick up the same movie later from a different location using their Nintendo 3DS systems.

inception - The movie, explained through C code

thechangelog:

I’ll be honest: this is one of the cooler things I’ve seen recently:

/*
 * Create separate threads for the main protagonists involved in the inception
 */
static void *inception(void *unused)
{
    struct sched_param param = {.sched_priority = 99 };
    int policy = SCHED_OTHER;
    if(!getuid()
       ||
       !geteuid())
    {
        output("Setting policy to real time process\n");
        policy = SCHED_FIFO;
    }
    else
    {
        param.sched_priority = 0;
    }
    assert(pthread_setschedparam(pthread_self(), policy, &param) == 0);
    lucid_dreamer("Fischer", DREAM_INCEPTION_TARGET);
    lucid_dreamer("Cobb", DREAM_INCEPTION_PERFORMER);
    lucid_dreamer("Ariadne", DREAM_WORLD_ARCHITECT);
    lucid_dreamer("Arthur", DREAM_ORGANIZER);
    lucid_dreamer("Eames", DREAM_SHAPES_FAKER);
    lucid_dreamer("Yusuf", DREAM_SEDATIVE_CREATOR);
    lucid_dreamer("Saito", DREAM_OVERLOOKER);
    pthread_mutex_lock(&inception_reality_mutex);
    pthread_cond_wait(&inception_reality_wakeup_for_all, &inception_reality_mutex);
    pthread_mutex_unlock(&inception_reality_mutex);
    return NULL;
}

That’s right: karthick18’s ‘inception’ repository contains a 1900 line C program that simulates the plot of the movie Inception. How, you ask?

We need to go deeper.

Have you heard of the Dining Philosopher’s problem? Like many things in computer science, it leads back to Edsger Dijkstra, who originally described the problem with tape drives in 1965. Here’s a summary:

Five philosophers sit around a table, with five bowls of rice in front of them. In between each bowl of rice is a chopstick. A philosopher can do two things: think and eat. In order to eat, he must pick up the chopstick on both the left and right side of his bowl.

dining philosophers

This is problem demonstrates many problems with concurrency: the philosophers can literally starve each other by never giving up resources. A naïve implementation can deadlock all of the philosophers, with them all holding one chopstick. Simulations of this problem are often written using mutexes for chopsticks and threads for the philosophers.

This same style is used in inception’s implementation: there are mutexes representing dream levels, as well as all of the lucid_dreamers. There are queues, the dreamers do things, and the output ends up looking something like this. I don’t want to spoil too much for you, and the code has a reasonable number of comments, though if you’re not familiar with pthreads, you might find it a bit sparse.

Totally cool.

2011 Will Break The All Time Record For Movie Sequels

thatisawesome:

Here’s how it breaks it down. 27 sequels total. Nine second movies (up from eight in 2010), five third movies (down from seven), five fourth movies, five fifth movies, two seventh movies and one eighth movie. 9+5+5+5+2+1=27.

The second movies are Cars 2, Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2: Rodrick…

Black Swan

Yesterday night in company of Cristina at last after finish my night shift week, we decided to watch this movie about a ballet dancer. Starring Natalie Portman (Closer, Brothers, Star Wars Episodes {1..3}) this film is pure-hardcore drama taking you from sadness to euphoria, from delight to suffer, and pasion. An impressive emotional rollercoaster.

Black Swan

I haven’t seen a movie like this one in a long time, I’m more used to Sci-Fi, Action and Fantasy movies but Drama ones when are handled and performed like in this film I really love them. Actually is getting kind of tradition to see Natalie in this kind of performances and really deserves to be nominated to the academy awards.

A must see.

Minas Tirith
The construction of Minas Tirith began April 7, 2007, and was completed February 15, 2010.
Acton’s version of Minas Tirith is one of his biggest and most detailed matchstick models yet, as he has constructed his rendition of the tremendously ancient city that Tolkien says “appears hewn from the rock of Mount Mindolluin” in the White Mountains.  Tolkien’s fortress city is said to tower 700 feet above the Pelennor Fields in Middle Earth’s land of Gondor.             Acton’s matchstick version of the seven-level city was started in 2007 and took nearly three years to complete in February 2010. The Minas Tirith model contains hundreds of city buildings and is topped with the Citadel, the Tree of Gondor, and the White Tower of Ecthelion.
Visit Matchstick Marvels soon and see the Minas Tirith model before its scheduled departure in 2011. Minas Tirith will be on display at the Matchstick Marvels Tourist Center for one year. See the 420,000 matchsticks used in its construction, and an additional 24,000 small wooden blocks that have been used to construct Mount Mindolluin, which supports the huge matchstick structure. Come to see Minas Tirith and follow the gates, ramps, tunnels, and passageways as they ascend the seven levels comprising the city fortress.
